The Lace Project: Visualizing Cryptocurrency Mining/Creation

LACE is a kinetic sculpture that demonstrates how cryptocurrency works in practice through a visual form. LACE is a modular system constructed of 10 kinetic units, each unit containing an array of 3 Microsoft Surface tablets and one delta robot arm to perform touch-based operations on each tablet with a modified stylus. The robot parts participate in a game of “guess a number” as a metaphor for the proof of work concept. The collection of tablets then participates in a consensus algorithm and confirms the winner of the mined crypto coins. LACE debuted at the Smithsonian Museum of U.S. History in April 2022 (seen above).
