Graduate Life Panel Discussion with Graduate Students (9:30 AM ~10:20PM)

In this Panel, Aarathi and Nure will give you some information about different topics including funding and cost of living, housing, transportation, recreational activities, etc.
We will also have a panel of students; Bipasha, Juliet, Makanjuola, MD Tahsin, Molly, Patrick, Runge, and Satvik, who would take your questions (about ANYTHING) and answer them from different perspectives.

Research Presentations (10:30AM~12:00PM)

Here is the name of the breakout rooms followed by a short keyword description of their Lab, their advisor’s name and their name, followed by a short blurb from the students themselves:

AR/VR: Li
3D Interaction Lab | Dr. Doug Bowman | Yuan Li
“Yuan will discuss the projects done at the 3D Interaction lab, focusing on Virtual/Augmented reality, pervasive technologies, and computer-supported collaborative work.”

Scientific Computing: Detwiler
Laboratory for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications (LASCA) | Joshua Detwiler
“Joshua will discuss the Laboratory for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications (LASCA), the Urban Computing program, and his research topic of applying numerical optimization to political and school redistricting.”

InfoViz: Davidson
Information Visualization Lab | Dr. Chris North | Kylie Davidson
“Kylie will be discussing research with the Information Visualization Lab (Advised by Chris North). We focus on: big data visualization and analytics, usable interactive human-in-the-loop analytics, large high-resolution display workspaces, and visual text analytics. “

HCI: Tausif
Echolab | Dr Sang Won Lee | Md Tahsin Tausif
” I’ll be introducing our lab, Echolab (of Dr. Sang Won Lee), what type of research we are conducting, current grad students, and such. I’ll also briefly talk about my current research works and future plans.”

CS Education: Basak-Hicks
Computer Science Education Research Group | Drs. Cliff Shaffer, Steve Edwards, Dennis Kafura | Arinjoy Basak, Alex Hicks
“Arinjoy and Alex will be discussing research conducted by the Computer Science Education Research Group (including work by Cliff Shaffer, Steve Edwards, Dennis Kafura). We focus on Smart learning objects (OpenDSA, CodeWorkout, WebCAT), tools, and infrastructure for improving the learning and teaching of computing (OpenFLAP, DevEventTracker, BlockPy), and analyzing student learning behavior (Deforms problem-solving system, quantifying incremental development practices).”

Neural Cryptanalysis: Meno
Emma Meno
“I’ll be discussing my Master’s thesis work in neural cryptanalysis, which harnesses machine learning to “learn” ciphers.  Given the intuition that a harder cipher will be more difficult to predict and replicate with neural networks, neural cryptanalysis provides a novel quantitative security measure.”

Yao Group: Ahmed
Yao Group | Dr. Danfeng Yao | Salman Ahmed
“I will be giving an overview of the ongoing research in Yao Group (https://yaogroup.cs.vt.edu/), especially about building deployment-grade security tools, large-scale security assurance measurement, anomaly detection in systems, secure coding, and data science with machine learning in medical information.”

HCI: Hu
Echolab | Dr. Sang Won Lee | Donghan Hu
“I will be discussing our HCI lab: Echolab conducted by Dr. Sang Won Lee, including current ongoing research, related topics, and so on. I will introduce my current research work and share my experience in this wonderful lab with amazing people.”
