(1) Generating Interactive Tutorials of Online Tasks by Demonstration- The idea of this project is to create effortless interactive tutorials, primarily with those of low digital literacy in mind. There will be two roles: a helper and a user. The helper will go through the online web task themself. From this, data will be collected from analyzing and listening to the helper’s web activity. Then, an interactive tutorial will be generated from this recording data. When a user uploads the interactive tutorial file (.itf), then certain elements and tips will appear on the page to aid the user through the process of accomplishing their desired web task. This allows for asynchronous and different place for collaboration which can be extremely beneficial to both the helper’s and user’s time.
(2) Geocaching City Series to help Inform Tourists and Increase City Awareness- Geocaching is a popular outdoors activity that has a lot of mystique behind it. In the Geocaching world, there are sometimes caches that belong to a series such as Halloween, Christmas, or sometimes just sometime capricious. The city of Roanoke is one of few that have a series that is city-themed, and they actually provide a small token if a person or persons find all of them. They leave a number at the bottom of each cache, and adding them up is proof that one has explored them all. Doing a study on the effects and benefits of a series of caches that help people get a better understanding of the city. This could be done by creating a pseudo series, carefully selecting the locations of existing caches or simply by creating the caches themselves and determining their locations. This also could improve the sense of community and pride of a city/town. This project allows for collaboration among different entities in a city. It also is a part of Geocaching which is aligned with this year’s HCI Outdoors theme. It is altering an existing technology to view its possible benefits.
