Bio:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a Professor and the Associate Department Head for Research in the Department of Computer Science<\/a> at Virginia Tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I direct the Destination Area on\u00a0Pandemic Prediction and Prevention<\/a>. We are a group of faculty members, staff, and students whose vision is to reach an an aspirational destination:\u00a0A world where we accurately foresee pandemics and proactively minimize their impact.<\/em>\u00a0We seek to reach this goal by addressing the grand challenge of uncovering the rules of life that underly virus-host interactions through community-based and ethically grounded research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am also the associate director for the\u00a0Computational Tissue Engineering<\/a>\u00a0interdisciplinary graduate education program. I am affiliated with the\u00a0Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined Virginia Tech in 2003 as an Assistant Professor. From 2001 to 2003, I was a Senior Research Associate in the Bioinformatics Programme<\/a> at Boston University<\/a>, where I worked with Simon Kasif<\/a>. Before joining Boston University, I worked at Compaq’s Cambridge Research Lab. Till July 1999, I was a post-doc in the Computer Science Department<\/a> at Stanford University<\/a>. I worked with Leo Guibas<\/a> and Jean-Claude Latombe<\/a> on problems arising in computational geometry, computer graphics<\/a>, and robotics<\/a>. In particular, I was working on the Tactical Mobile Robots project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I came to Stanford, I was a Ph.D. student at the Department of Computer Science<\/a> at Brown University<\/a>. From July 1993 to August 1998, I was a visiting scholar at the Department of Computer Science<\/a> at Duke University<\/a>, where my advisor Jeff Vitter<\/a> moved from Brown University. I was a member of the Center for Geometric Computing<\/a> at Duke. Before I started my graduate studies at Brown in 1991, I spent four years at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)<\/a> getting a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and Engineering<\/a>. My last two years in high school were spent at the pride of Luz Circle, Vidya Mandir<\/a>, Madras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0my research<\/a>, I focus on problems in computational systems biology. Currently, I am working in the area of cellular response networks and their building blocks (network legos<\/a>), gene function prediction (GAIN<\/a>,\u00a0Art<\/a>,\u00a0MENGO<\/a>), host-pathogen protein-protein interactions (prediction<\/a>,\u00a0landscape<\/a>) biclustering algorithms and their applications (xMotif<\/a>,\u00a0visualisation<\/a>,\u00a0XcisClique<\/a>,\u00a0Arabidopsis CO2<\/a>,\u00a0RankGene<\/a>), and conserved protein interaction modules (GraphHopper<\/a>). I am also interested in the problem of identifying ligand migration pathways in proteins such as\u00a0myoglobin<\/a>. In previous research, I studied problems in\u00a0computational geometry<\/a>, especially those motivated by applications in\u00a0computer graphics<\/a>,\u00a0robotics<\/a>, and\u00a0geographic information systems<\/a>. In my\u00a0Ph.D. thesis<\/a>, I studied the problem of\u00a0hidden-surface removal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
