{"id":454,"date":"2015-04-01T14:00:23","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T18:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.cs.vt.edu\/csblog\/?p=454"},"modified":"2015-04-09T11:37:48","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T15:37:48","slug":"csvt-student-cory-bart-wins-at-the-acm-sigcse-student-research-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.cs.vt.edu\/csblog\/2015\/04\/01\/csvt-student-cory-bart-wins-at-the-acm-sigcse-student-research-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"CS@VT student Cory Bart wins at the ACM SIGCSE Student Research Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hosting.cs.vt.edu\/gpcstudents\/homepages\/index.php?student=acbart\">Cory Bart,<\/a>CS Ph.D.,student, recently won 3rd place at the ACM SIGCSE Student Research Competition in early March 2015.\u00a0 His project was entitled \u201cSituating Computational Thinking with BigData Pedagogy and Technology\u201d.\u00a0 Cory&#8217;s co-advisors are Cliff Shaffer and Eli Tilevich.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his work, Cory said, &#8220;As Computational Thinking becomes pervasive in undergraduate programs, new students must be educated in meaningful, authentic contexts that they find both motivating and relatable.\u00a0 I propose working with big data as a novel context for introductory programming, authentic given its importance in diverse fields such as agriculture, history, and more.\u00a0 Big data is considered difficult to use because of its inherent technical obstacles.\u00a0 To overcome these difficulties, I introduce a new project: CORGIS &#8211; a &#8220;Collection of Real-time, Giant, Interesting, Situated Datasets&#8221;.\u00a0 The CORGIS project comprises a collection of libraries that provide an interface to big data for students, architectures for rapidly enabling new datasets, and a web-based textbook platform for disseminating relevant course materials.\u00a0 This textbook features an online block-based programming environment, real-time collaborative text editing, and continuous server-side storage.\u00a0 In this poster, I describe the educational theory guiding this work, the novel technology created and deployed, and the initial, promising results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations Cory!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive img-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/dl.dropboxusercontent.com\/u\/23141976\/acbart.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Cory Bart\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cory Bart,CS Ph.D.,student, recently won 3rd place at the ACM SIGCSE Student Research Competition in early March 2015.\u00a0 His project was entitled \u201cSituating Computational Thinking with BigData Pedagogy and Technology\u201d.\u00a0 Cory&#8217;s co-advisors are Cliff Shaffer and Eli Tilevich.
