See text below.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Microsoft has taken particular notice of Virginia Tech computer scientist Wu Feng\u2019s\u00a0leadership in cutting-edge research that involves computing in the cloud.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The company\u00a0is using the College of Engineering supercomputing expert\u2019s collaborative ideas\u00a0in one of its global advertising campaigns, describing Virginia Tech scientists and\u00a0engineers as\u00a0\u201cleaders in harnessing supercomputer powers to deliver lifesaving\u00a0treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Microsoft ran a full-page ad ran this past summer in the <i>Washington Post, New York\u00a0<\/i><i>Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business Week, United Hemispheres,\u00a0<\/i><i>The Economist, Forbes, Fortune, TIME, Popular Mechanics<\/i>, and <i>Golf Digest<\/i>,\u00a0as well as a host of other venues in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.\u00a0In the winter of 2015, it plans to run a television ad throughout the U.S. and western\u00a0Europe highlighting Feng\u2019s work on computing the cure for cancer, using the cloud.\u00a0Virginia Tech researchers Wu Feng and David Mittelman won the first worldwide\u00a0research award from the NVIDIA Foundation, as part of its \u201cCompute the Cure\u201d program.\u00a0The\u00a0award is enabling them to develop a faster genome analysis platform that\u00a0will make it easier for genomics researchers to identify mutations that are relevant to\u00a0cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>For information on this original grant, <a title=\"Original Grant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vtnews.vt.edu\/articles\/2011\/04\/042811-engineering-fengmittelmangrant.html\" target=\"_blank\">click here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>The cloud that is helping\u00a0cure cancer.<\/strong>\u00a0Research that once took years now happens in hours.\u00a0Using Microsoft Azure and HDInsight, scientists and\u00a0engineers at Virginia Tech harness supercomputing\u00a0power to analyze vast amounts of DNA\u00a0sequencing\u00a0information and help deliver lifesaving\u00a0treatments.
