The paper compares human computation with crowdsourcing,\nsocial computing, and data mining and explain how they are similar but\ndifferent. The paper continues to study the dimensions related to human\ncomputation, starting with motivation. These include factors such as pay, altruism,\nand joy. The next dimension that the paper discuss is quality control, the\nmethod of ensuring an above-threshold accuracy of human computation results.\nThese included multi-response agreement, expert review, and automatic check. Then,\nthe paper introduces how the gathered computations by many humans can be aggregated\ntogether to solve the ultimate problem. These included collection, statistical processing,\nimprovement, and search. Finally, the paper discusses a few more small\ndimensions such as process order and task-request cardinality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I enjoyed the paper\u2019s attempt to generate a taxonomy\nfor human computation which can be easily ill-defined. I think the paper did a\ngood job at it by starting with the definition and breaking it down into major\ncomponents. In the paper\u2019s discussion about aggregation, it was interesting to\nme that they included \u201cnone\u201d, which means the individual human computations by\nthemselves are the major problem that the requester wants solved, and there is\nno need for aggregation of all the results. Another thing I found fascinating\nabout the project was their mentioning of motivation for the humans performing\nthe computation. Even though it is natural that people will not perform the\ntasks for nothing, it did not occur to me that this would be a major factor to\nconsider when utilizing human computation. Of the list of possible motivations,\nI found altruism to be a humorous and unexpected category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was also reminded of a project that used\nhuman computation, called \u201cPlace\u201d held in a community called Reddit, where a\nuser of the community could place a colored pixel on a shared canvas once in a\nfew minutes. The aggregation of human computation of \u201cPlace\u201d would probably be\nconsidered as iterative improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the questions that I could come up with\nwhile reading the paper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. The aggregation category \u201cnone\u201d is very\ninteresting, but I cannot come up with an immediate example. What would be a\ngood case of utilizing human computation that doesn\u2019t require aggregation of\nthe results?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. In the Venn diagram figure of the paper\nshowing relationships between human computation, crowdsourcing, and social computing,\nwhat kind of problems would go into the region where all three overlap? This\nwould be a problem where many people on the Internet with no explicit relation\nto each other socially interact and cooperate to perform computation that\nmachines cannot yet do. The collected results may be aggregated to solve a larger\nproblem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Data mining was not considered a human\ncomputation because it was about an algorithm trying to discover information\nfrom data collected from humans.
