{"id":426,"date":"2019-02-07T02:29:38","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T02:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.cs.vt.edu\/cs4984spring19\/?p=426"},"modified":"2019-02-07T02:29:39","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T02:29:39","slug":"reading-reflection-4-02-07-2019-jacob-benjamin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.cs.vt.edu\/cs4984spring19\/2019\/02\/07\/reading-reflection-4-02-07-2019-jacob-benjamin\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Reflection #4 \u2013 02\/07\/2019 \u2013 Jacob Benjamin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Analyzing\nRight-wing YouTube Channels: Hate, Violence and Discrimination<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ottoni, R. et\nal (2018) investigated the differences between user interactions on far-right wing\nYouTube channels, compared to a baseline sample of channels.&nbsp; The study specifically searched for differences\nin lexical and topical between the two types of channels, as well as the\ninstances and degree of implicant bias in the texts.&nbsp; The two main research questions were as\nfollows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is hateful vocabulary, violent\ncontent and discriminatory biases more, less, or equally prevalent in\nright-wing channels?<\/li><li>Are video commenters more, less or\nequally aggravated than video hosts, and do they express more, less, or and equal\namount of hate and discrimination?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ottoni, R. et al (2018) hoped that the methods detailed in\nthe study could be extended to any type of text.&nbsp; The following results were found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Right-wing channels tended to contain\nmore \u201cnegative\u201d semantics fields, such as \u201chate\u201d, \u201ckill\u201d, \u201canger\u201d, \u201csadness\u201d,\nand \u201cswearing\u201d.&nbsp; This is opposed to \u201cpositive\u201d\nsemantics such as \u201cjoy\u201d, \u201clove\u201d, \u201coptimism\u201d, and \u201cpoliteness\u201d.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Typically approached topics related\nto war and terrorism.<\/li><li>Demonstrated more discriminatory\nbias against Muslims and towards LGBT people.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\npersonally found this study to be fascinating, as well as some of the\nresults.&nbsp; I disagree that results of a\nstudy have to be surprising to be worthwhile.&nbsp;\nWe are very good at misleading ourselves (i.e. superstitious behaviors,\netc.), thus I find merit in finding unsurprising results if they answer a research\nquestion that has not been pursued before.&nbsp;\nHaving said that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I did\nnot find the results of Ottoni, R. et al (2018) to be particularly surprising.&nbsp; While I am sure in group members with\nright-wing leanings likely have different opinions on the matter, I believe\nthere has already been a lot of research on the emotions and language choices displayed\nmy left- and right-wing leaning people.&nbsp;\nI personally conducted a badly designed study on the differences in\nemotion displayed by left- and right- wing leaning people when viewing internet\nmemes (a study I would like to revisit eventually).&nbsp; Many of the results I found corresponded to\nthe results found in this study.<\/li><li>The study\nimplemented a variety of analysis methods beyond lexical analysis.&nbsp; In the previous reflection, I made the point\nthat perhaps lexical analysis on its own does not provide as much precision within\nthe model as we would hope for.&nbsp; The\ninclusion of topical analysis and implicate bias analysis appears to cover a few\nadditional facets to perceiving intent behind the text.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work Cited:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ottoni, R., Cunha, E., Magno,\nG., Bernardina, P., Jr., W.
