Discussion is an essential step \/ component in\ncollaboration. While it is believed by the authors that discussion can improve\nability to confront public problems, web-based public discussions are thought to\nbe inflammatory and hyperbolic for proper information decisions. The authors\nargued that this might be partly caused by a lack of useful interface\nsupporting listening. The reason is that through listening, discussion\nparticipants can establish more common understanding about the topic. Through a\nbetter understanding, there lies a possibility for improved quality of opinions\ngenerated in the discussion. Therefore, the authors proposed a deeper\nunderstanding of listening on the web, along with the design, deployment and\nevaluation. Reflect<\/em>, the listening\ninterface for online comment boards responds to their insight that incorporates\nan emphasis on listening interface. As evaluation,\nthe authors deploy Reflect<\/em> on three\nmeans which they further divide into two categories, all of which demonstrated\ntraction for voluntary public use and for summarizing full discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The paper is obviously well-written. I found no difficulty\nin following the authors\u2019 motivation, approach and evaluation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The motivation is simple: discussion leads to better\ncollaboration. To ensure high quality discussion, a thorough understanding of each\nparticipant\u2019s argument is required. Hence, listening interface can both\nfacilitate and evaluation such understanding by allowing readers to restate and\nsummarize content. This makes sense to me because any meaningful discussion I\nencountered in my life is based on neutral understanding of the argument.\nHowever, internet is a place where such understanding is missing and thus\ndiscussion sometimes inevitably becomes quarrelling. On the other hand, the writer\nshould also be expressive enough to eliminate misunderstanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The original content writer can view the restated \/\nsummarized content to update on his writing or explain more on the details.\nThis feedback further improves communication. The listener can also clarify the\nrestatement if questioned. This positive cycle facilitates discussion through establishing\nunderstanding. Moreover, the entire process is transparent to other web viewers\nso that any one can pick on a topic rather faster and more accurate due to the\nsummaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tool and its evaluation is another thing that interests\nme. The qualitative analysis writing is particularly useful for me when I do\nneed to study things in this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seems like the listening interface is for comment-based\ndiscussion.
